Abstract

The objectives of this study are as follows: 1) to gain information about the economic and social situation of transmigrants before they leave overpopulated areas; 2) analyse the decisive reasons and motivations which make individuals join transmigration programmes; 3) form an impression of expectations regarding living conditions in the new areas; 4) compare the real situation in transmigration settlements with expectations. The study is based on interviews with 348 transmigrant families in transit camps in various locations in Java, Bali, Madura, and Lombok; and 201 interviews with transmigrants settled in Riau and East Kalimantan.
