Abstract

This article is a preliminary investigation of socio-cultural orientations in five Indonesian societies - Aceh, West Sumatra, South Sumatra, West Kalimantan and Bali. Respondents were asked their opinions and attitudes on a number of basic questions relevant to socio-economic development: a) what does one see as the aim of life; b) what does one see as the function of work; c) what does one see as the main cause of success in enterprise; d) what should one do with surplus money; e) what does one want one's children to become - in the case of adolescent respondents, how do they wish their own future; f) how does one see the social intercourse of today's youth as compared with that of one generation ago; g) which language does one preferably use in everyday life; h) how does one see the function of the traditional arts. Such differences in attitudes as exist between respondents in the five regions, between the younger and the older generation, and between respondents from big and small towns and villages are briefly analysed.
